Summer is here, and we hope you're all enjoying your gardens, your vacations, your families, and lots of outdoor activities.

The garden club will have a July lunch gathering! We typically do not have a summer meeting agenda, but at this lunch we will call a General Meeting so that the attending members can approve the minutes of our May meeting. Our new officers were installed at the May meeting, and in order for the club to commence our usual business, including our banking at Amegy Bank, these meeting minutes need to be approved. A copy of the minutes is attached here for your review.
We look forward to seeing you on July 12 at Esteban's!

Wednesday, May 10, 2023

2222 Coveside St.

10:00 a.m.

Glen Cove subdivision

Kemah, Texas, 77565

This meeting is the last regularly scheduled meeting for the year. We will install the new officers who will replace those officers whose terms are ending, and show our appreciation to these outgoing officers.

Two important call-outs regarding our May meeting:

1) Our Treasurer-Elect, Marilyn Hakim, has resigned. Patty McElhany has stepped in to fill the Treasurer-elect position on the slate of incoming officers that will be voted on at the May meeting. Any comments on Patty's nomination are welcome prior to the May 10 meeting by replying to this email.

2) There is a proposed change to the League City Garden Club Standing Rules, which members will consider and vote for approval at the May 10 meeting:

Although ARTICLE VII-OFFICERS, Section 1. of the League City Garden Club Bylaws states: "The officers of the club shall be a President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer", certain circumstances may require two persons to share an elected position, where one person will be the main contact, and both share and assist in all manners pertaining to the position. In this case, the Executive Officers must approve the Nominating Slate of Officers before the Slate can be presented to the members at the January general meeting. If the Executive Officers do not approve the Slate, the Nominating Committee must submit an alternate Nominating Slate of Officers.

Any comments on this change to the Standing Rules are welcome prior to the May 10 meeting by replying to this email.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the May meeting!

The League City Park Operations department will host a big clean up at Lobit Park on FM 646.
They've invited LCGC members to participate on Saturday, November 5 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Here is the link to League City's announcement. You can sign up to participate here.

Wildflower project: November 8th at 10am.
We received approval to plant wildflower seeds on the west side of Hwy 3 in addition to the east side. We are set for planting on November 8th at 10am. The city will be tilling the west side. The east side will be planted with a seed drill tractor so as not to bury the seeds from last year. As a garden club we will focus on the area around our LCGC sign, and the idea is to plant that area heavily with bluebonnets to make our sign "pop". For those that want to help we will meet in the parking area on the northbound side of Hwy 3 and 96. I will ask that those wishing to participate bring a trowel and rake and gloves.
Thanks to those of you that participated last year and for the good wishes from those that could not. There will not be an enormous amount of work in this, so if you would like to just bring a chair to witness that is fine, too.
Watch for email or postings on our Facebook page for rainout changes.

Please remember to support the horticulture table at the meeting by bringing a plant or cuttings to share, swap, or purchase. Seed packs and seeds that you've harvested (include planting and care instructions, please) are also welcome to share, as are gardening books, magazines and catalogs.

We're looking for a big project idea to engage our members and promote the work of our club for the 2022-23 year. A suggestion box will be available at the meeting so that everyone has an opportunity to contribute an idea or two. Members will vote and select one idea to be developed and executed this year.

On April 13, our club will have a "field trip" to the Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Garden. Entry to the arboretum is free. The bus transportation will be approximately $11.00 per person. We plan to eat lunch in the Humble area near the arboretum. Each member will purchase their own lunch. Sue Bain is coordinating the trip and she'll need to have an accurate headcount to order one or more buses for our transportation. Please contact Sue at sue.bain@gmail.com to let her know if you'll attend. There will also be a sign up sheet at our March meeting.

See you all at the March 9 meeting!
